Hello, I bought a John Deere MC crawler that was stuck. The ole boy that owned it was using it until he had some health problems. My uncle and I got it unstuck, cleaned up, and put back together. I put new spark plugs in it and it seems to have very nice spark. It will not start though. Although the distributer hasn't been touched I decided to start with timing. According to this website the spark should be on TDC. So I checked the rotor and it lines up with the plug wire at TDC. Am I understanding this correctly?? I decided to then take the carb apart since we all know what old gas does to carbs. It seemed clean but I took a can of carb cleaner and straw and cleaned all the ports. After this is done I opened the idle needle 3/4 to 1 turn and the load needle to 1.5 to 2 turns. It still will not fire. I gave it a slight sniff of ether (as much as I hate it) and it halfway fired but not even close to making it run. What do you guys think it might be? I thought about taking the carb to a professional but thought I would ask what your thoughts were first. I am learning (20 years old) so any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Does it backfire when you use starting fluid. Are the valves closing all the way? Take a sqirt bottle with gas and while you try to start it spray in to the carb. I have a m john deere I made run without a carb and intake to see if it had any noise when I pulled it out of a fence row

Also check to see if you are getting enough gas to the carb

Pull the plugs. Are they wet or dry? that should direct you towards or away from carburation. Shove in a compression tester and open the throttle all the way and run the starter. What do they measure? Use a timing light to check the actual timing on the #1 cylinder.

I pull spark plugs, make sure they are clean, drip a little gas in spark both plug holes (with plugs out), put the plugs in as quick as possible, install wires(front wire to front plug I think), turn switch on, and crank. The engine should fire a few times if everything is close to right. Sometimes that all it takes to get them running. Repeat this a couple of times if engine runs and quits. If it won't run after a few tries, it is probably the carb. Carb float may be stuck.

Right now I forget the details, but there's something about the distributor, using on a 2-cylinder engine what was really designed for a 4-cylinder, that makes it east to have it out of time and not know it. Maybe it's that the distributor can easily be re-inserted into the engine 180 degrees from where it should be. Squirting a little gasoline or ether into the engine to see if you can get it to fire, as others have suggested, is a great help in isolating the problem - along with a compression check. Check for the possibility of excess air leakage paths around the choke shaft and particularly throttle shaft. I suspect the carburetor will need to be disassembled, soaked out in real carb cleaner, blown out with compressed air and all internal passages gone through with the right size of drill bit - hand held, of course. All these steps may need to be done more than once. Then use a carb rebuild kit to get critical parts and gaskets when reassembling. Load & idle jet and float level are important adjustments too, It's a meticulous process but it will sound oh so good then she takes off.

I would do a compression test to verify if you haven't.

Use the spray type carb cleaner instead of gasoline in the spark plug holes to test fire.

I would also go over how to set the timing from the manual. Spark on TDC does not sound right to me. I just did this on my MT. You pull the front plug and rotate the engine until you feel pressure/air on your thumb in the plug hole. Remove the small inspection cover on the clutch housing, its on the distributor side. Slowly rotate the engine until you see SPARK on the flywheel in the window. It should not be far from when you feel the pressure. You then set point gap from .18-.22 while holding the cam in the distributor as advanced as possible. Then you can adjust your distributor if you still need to advance or retard the opening and closing of the points. I needed a helper and took me more than one try to get it spot on. The manual has a good step by step process on this.

Thanks for all the help guys! I loosened up the tabs on the distributor and worked it back and forth till she took off. The engine sounds nice but I need to work with it a little bit. It has a surge to it at lower rpms. Im guessing it may be an adjustment on the rod from the governor to the carb. Any other thoughts?? Thanks again!

That is what i initially thoughy but moving the idle screw in and out does not seem to change it at all.

The oil pump on a Dubuque engine has to be timed with a tool. If not it will only run on one cylinder.
